Lose weight or die…. Is what my primary care physician told me in 2019 and what have I done so far? - [updated 9/29/2023]

Weight management has always been an issue my entire life, I have gained and lost over 100 pounds THREE times in the last 20 years. Whatever diet program, book, shot or pill that has come along during that time frame, most likely I have already tried it and failed. This blog will focus on weight management events after a failed attempt at a weight loss boot camp in Tampa, FL that I attended for 6 weeks in 2019 and what I have done since.

In early 2016 I had a full right hip replacement, one of my first body parts to give up so to speak due to carrying way too much extra baggage. The entire ordeal from selecting an Orthopedist to post surgery recovery was much easier than I had ever expected, less dealing with my health insurance company Easy yes, but still would never want to deal with a repeat but this is what is waiting for me. My Orthopedist was quite clear, get your weight in control or be prepared for replacing the left hip.

Did I listen?  in 2016, post hip surgery I was 325 lbs. Since then I have been going in the opposite direction and packed on a substantial amount of weight, December 2017 I was hovering just a tad under 400 lbs. Besides experiencing new hip pain on both sides, unable to do simple tasks we take for granted and just feeling completely lethargic and not enjoying live, I decided to get serious in 2018 and searched for a physician who specialized in obesity.

I found one such physician, and started seeing him weekly. weight had dropped down to near my post hip surgery weight and was looking forward to getting under 300 lbs. for the first time in  years. In mid 2018 this physician was no longer accepting my current health insurance company, I stopped the program which included weekly testosterone shots (had low T numbers) and unfortunately went back to bad eating habits and the weight came back.

January 2019 I was over 395 lbs. and decided to see a new primary care physician. During my first appointment my blood pressure was 174 / 101, this got his attention and mine and this is where things started. My physician initially was pushing bariatric surgery, I was not on board with his suggestion but went ahead with the pre-surgical protocol.

I have validated many times over why dieting simply doesn't work, with loosing and regaining 100 lbs. in three different occasions over the last 20 years, seems I'm a master at yo-yo dieting. So what does work? It's not as simple as "Eat less, move more", if it was Obesity would not be in near epidemic numbers.

In my opinion what is required is a PERMANENT change in mindset, lifestyle, whatever else you want to call it, the brain has to be rebooted and cleared of all previous eating habits. The body needs to embrace some sort of physical activity, I was hoping that attending a weight loss boot camp would help with this mind / body reset. However as you read on within this blog you will learn that my weight loss boot camp experience in mid 2019 was a total failure and a complete waste of time and money

Here is the at home video of my weigh-in on the morning I left for the boot camp, Sunday 5/12/2019
